The theme for this year’s Summit is Building Bridges: Connecting Communities with Culture and Commerce. Although you are welcome to submit any topic related to creative placemaking, the Summit is specifically seeking sessions on the topics below:
Community and Neighborhood Revitalization
Projects that are coordinated efforts between the community and other stakeholders to improve the physical, economic, and social conditions of a specific neighborhood that may be struggling due to disinvestment, poverty, crime, or neglect. Projects should include creative practice, cultural identity, or artistic engagement as part of the planning and/or implementation. Projects should be focused on the process, inter-disciplinary collaboration and strong community engagement.
Economic Development/Economic Impact
Strategic initiatives within cities and towns that leverage the arts, culture, and creativity to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and attract new investments. The emphasis will be the outcome, impact and systems change rather than the process. Examples can include arts-business districts; cultural tourism or municipal support for artist-created businesses or artist participation in workforce development programs.
Music-based Projects, Policies and Programs:
Policies and programs that leverage music as a tool to enhance the economic, social, and cultural vibrancy of a city, town or rural community using a combination of infrastructure investment, policy support, and community engagement to create a thriving local music ecosystem. Examples can include tourism based on music; music festivals; free or low-cost public programming featuring music; supporting musicians through programs such as free or low cost-rehearsal spaces; and supporting diverse musical genres and under-represented types of music.
Multi and Interdisciplinary Collaboratives for Urban and Rural Development
Redevelopment or new development projects, public infrastructure improvements, or mixed-use developments with the goal of aligning cultural value and design integrity. Projects that include arts and creative practice professionals, architects, city government, urban planners/designers, real estate developers and community stakeholders. Examples include major civic infrastructure projects that may combine transportation, green space, public art, and equity-based real estate planning; new design or rehabilitation of public buildings or spaces that include creative practices and practitioners in planning and execution.
Projects Representing the Appalachian States
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Indiana and the additional Appalachian region including New York, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.
Presentation Formats

You may choose one of the following formats for your session. Please review thoroughly to make sure your session application and content fits into one of these formats.
Sessions should be approximately 70 minutes in length and can include recorded media.

-
Hands-on Workshop (1-2 facilitators): Interactive workshops focused on teaching practical skills, strategies, toolkits and techniques. This would not be a lecture-style session.
-
Panel Presentation (up to 3 panelists): Presentations of projects past, current and future. Panels should include a diverse set of voices, featuring perspectives from multiple disciplines, projects, backgrounds or cultures. We cannot accept a panel where all speakers are from the same company/organization.
-
Research or Case Study Presentation (1-2 presenters): A presentation on research or a case study on one of the specific topics requested by the Summit. This can include presenters from the same organization.
