About Memphis

Memphis is a city of profound cultural influence—an iconic American crossroads shaped by its Civil Rights legacy, its musical innovation, and the deep roots of the communities who built it. Defined by resilience and creativity, Memphis continues to honor its past while forging a vibrant, inclusive future.

Founded in 1819 along the Mississippi River, Memphis has long held a pivotal place in American history. Once a major cotton-trading center, the city later became a national focal point in the Civil Rights Movement, most notably as the site of the 1968 sanitation workers’ strike and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Long before European settlement, the Chickasaw people lived along the bluffs and riverbanks that would become modern-day Memphis, cultivating a thriving society on this strategic stretch of the Mississippi.

In the 20th century, Memphis helped shape the social and cultural fabric of the nation. The fight for civil rights accelerated here as workers, clergy, and community leaders demanded dignity, equality, and economic justice—struggles that reverberated far beyond the city. At the same time, musicians across Memphis created sounds that defined generations, from blues on Beale Street to soul at Stax and rock ’n’ roll at Sun Studios.

Today, Memphis is home to the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, an internationally recognized institution preserving and interpreting the stories of the Movement. The city’s riverfront, historic districts, and creative communities continue to draw visitors from around the world, all drawn to a place where American history and culture converge.
