Michael Cowan
Grants Director, Community LIFT | Board President, Memphis Slim Collaboratory

Michael Cowan is a seasoned community development strategist with extensive experience leading initiatives at the intersection of culture, equity, and economic revitalization. He currently serves as the Grants Director for Community LIFT, a funding intermediary and strategic partner supporting neighborhood-based revitalization efforts across Memphis. In this role, Michael oversees the design and administration of several targeted funds, including the CDC Capacity Fund, Pre-Development Fund, and Memphis Empowerment Fund, which collectively expand the capacity of local nonprofits, small businesses, and community development corporations.

In addition to his work at Community LIFT, Michael is the Board President of the Memphis Slim Collaboratory, a cultural hub and creative incubator located in the historic Soulsville neighborhood. Under his leadership, the Collaboratory has reemerged as a dynamic space for music education, artist development, and community engagement, anchored by a deep commitment to honoring Memphis’ musical legacy.

Michael’s career is marked by a consistent focus on place-based investment, philanthropic partnerships, and Black-led innovation. He is recognized for his ability to blend grassroots insight with institutional strategy, ensuring that revitalization efforts remain accountable to the communities they aim to serve.

Lakeisha Edwards
Executive Director, UrbanArt Commission, Memphis

Lakeisha Edwards is a seasoned leader in public service, arts, and nonprofit sectors, currently serving as Executive Director of the UrbanArt Commission in Memphis. With over 20 years of experience—including 13 years with Child Support Services of Tennessee and leadership roles at the Mid-South Food Bank and Art Ventures—she brings deep expertise in community engagement and program development.

As co-chair of the Creative Placemaking Summit, Lakeisha champions community-driven public art that reflects and uplifts local voices. She serves on several civic boards, reviews grants for national and state arts agencies, and is a recurring juror for The Beauty of Change exhibition at the Hooks Institute.

In 2025, she was named one of Memphis Business Journal’s “Super Women in Business”, and her work has been featured in Forbes and Memphis Magazine for her leadership and commitment to building stronger, more connected communities through the arts.
